Welcome to life on the road…
Today marks the first day of the longest road trip we've had so far this year. I'm coming to you from "The Land of Enchantment", according to the sign I read as we crossed into New Mexico.
Our team flew into El Paso, Texas, today and is busing into New Mexico to Las Cruces to start what will be a stretch of nine or 10 cities on our "Bound 4 Beijing" tour in 20 days. These are the trips where we sympathize with baseball players.
I will admit this was my first experience in El Paso, even though it was just the airport. I was excited to be in Texas, but more so to see the sun shining! The sun hasn't graced Chicago with its presence much lately, so I'll take what I can get.
Since I last wrote, I was home in Chicago for a whole week! That's something to celebrate. My bed got spoiled for having me around every night for a week. I think my condo gets used to no one living in it. =)
It was nice to get to spend some quality time with my players at DePaul, though. We had some really good practices, and I even coached my first home game, which also happened to be our first Big East conference games, as well. I get excited on game days: they make me wish I could've played in college forever (minus going to school forever, though).
I was excited to get to have a few friends visit Chicago while I was home. It's not very often I have entertainment, but I was able to have dinner down on Michigan Ave. twice. I witnessed my first-ever live professional soccer game when the New England Revolution played the Chicago Fire, but I will admit I was cheering for the visiting Revolution. The game didn't end in their favor, but it was fun to watch none the less.
On another note, I am really happy to be heading to my hometown soon! After playing in New Mexico this weekend, we'll travel to Houston to play the University of Houston on April 8. It's always nice to get to go home, but it's going to be better to get to play in front of people I have known forever. In 2004, our Houston stop got rained out, so I really haven't played in Houston for a long time!
There isn't a whole lot else going on. In our week off I was working and working out. I used to find it hard to work out on my own, but now I actually enjoy it. I really find it somewhat calming to go into the weight room with my iPOD and be on my own time. As much as traveling is tiring, it's great to know we are all working toward a common goal both when we are together and at home.
